Literacy Volunteers of Valley Shore classes and my Personal goals

I came to the United States on September 11, 2001. I remember I spoke little English. I couldn’t communicate with the people, and I felt frustrated. In these seven and half years my life has changed.

Now everything looks easier for me, because I don’t need somebody to translate for me anymore. Now I’m able to help my three daughters with their school. After my Literacy lessons, I can now talk with my daughters’ teachers and meet with my grandson’s pediatrician.

I also work in Burger King. When I started my job, I only made salads – now I work in the front taking orders. My boss gets compliments about my customer service and my English skills. While I am doing this essay, I realize writing is easier than before, thanks to the Literacy Volunteers I feel more confident.

Everything starts small. In the future I hope to continue to improve the skills I mentioned. Also I would like to find a more challenging job. Then I could use my English lessons and the knowledge I have in computer programming.

Since I have started with my Literacy lessons with Laurie Douglas, my English has improved. Laurie has helped me to better myself in the English language. She has been teaching me for over four months now, and I enjoy working with her very much. I would like to thank the program, because thanks to it, I have been given the chance to learn the English language, allowing me to become a better citizen, and person. thanks to this program I have been given the opportunity not only to learn English, but also to meet great people like Laurie.
